Vaccination Requirements for Kenya

Most international travellers do not need any compulsory vaccinations to enter Kenya unless they are arriving from, or have transited through, a Yellow Fever risk country.

In that case, a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required. Kenya no longer requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a pre-departure COVID-19 test for routine entry.

For safari travel, guests should still consult a doctor or travel clinic well before departure for personal advice on recommended vaccinations, malaria prevention and general travel health.

STUDENT

Is herein defined as an individual from a recognized secondary, government or private college university aged up to 23 years old visiting the Parks for purposes of learning about conservation through a documented and organized arrangement with that institution and excludes students on personally arranged holidays. KWS will require a minimum of two weeks’ notice in order to issue written authorization for student rates.

CHILDREN

Refers to persons from 3 years but below 18 years.

CORPORATE PASS

May be issued to eligible utility providers having installations within KWS managed Parks/Reserves.

CITIZENS

Refers to Kenya Citizens with valid National ID/Passports and Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi citizens with valid Passports.

RESIDENTS: Refers to persons of other nationalities residing in Kenya with valid documentation from the Kenyan government.

How to get there

Distance: 240 km from Nairobi, 250km from Mombasa (Mtito Andei Gate).

By air: There are 3 airstrips in the park

Gates: Tsavo, Lake Jipe, Mtito Andei (Kamboyo HQ), Chyulu, Maktau and Ziwani.

Roads: The main access routes are through Chyulu Gate from Amboseli and Mtito Andei Gate from Nairobi. Visitors from Mombasa also use Tsavo Gate near Manyani. The Park can also be reached via Taveta - Voi road through Maktau, Ziwani and Jipe Gates.

Airstrips: Kamboyo, Kilaguni, Tsavo Gate, Jipe, Kasigau,Finch Hottons, Ziwani, and Maktau airstrips are in good.

• The spectacle Mzima Springs is the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal clear water gushing out of from the under parched lava rocks, forming the most welcoming and lovely scene in Africa

• Ancient lands of Lions, in 1898 the Uganda railway construction was abruptly halted by the two of the most voracious and insatiable man-eating lions appeared upon the scene, and for over nine month waged intermittent warfare against the railway and all those connected with it in the vicinity of Tsavo.

• A vibrant volcanic arena; molten lava that form Shetani lava spewed from the earth just about 200 years ago and its fiery fury was thought by locals to be work of the Devil.

• Poacher's Lookout and roaring rocks; the Park abound the panoramic vintage point from which to view the movement of the herds.

• Glorious game drives; Tsavo west offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world

• Ngulia Sanctuary; this is where the growing population of highly endangered black rhino are inching from chasm of extinction forced upon them by rampant poaching in the 1960s.

• Lake Jipe, lies astride Kenya and Tanzania boarder and is teeming with aquatic life, Bird watching I also major activity around the lake.

• First World War Site-East African Campaign, Perhaps the most bizarre campaign of the world war was fought in the “Bundu” (Bush) – the barely explored wilderness of thorny scrub and dense forest of Tsavo west. This last ‘gentleman war’ was waged under the code of honor-sometimes; or under guerilla tactics adopted from African tribal fighters. The Guided tours of the Crater, Kichwa Tembo and Mzima fort will enable you trail the real footsteps of the world war veterans.

It is recommended that all visitors see their doctor 4-8 weeks prior to departure for advice on medication and vaccinations. Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and polio are usually recommended vaccinations.

Visitors over one year of age entering Kenya from yellow fever infected areas must have an international certificate of vaccination. Malaria remains a serious risk in much of the country (although the risk is lower in the highlands above 2,500m), and visitors are strongly advised to take prophylactic treatment before leaving home and throughout your time in Kenya. Drinking tap water is not advisable.

Health and travel insurance are highly recommended, and you should ensure that your travel insurance includes emergency evacuation

Kenya no longer issues traditional tourist visas for most international visitors. Instead, travellers are required to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Kenya.

The eTA should be completed before departure and applies to most visitors, including children and infants. Travellers will usually need a passport valid for at least six months, with at least one blank page, as well as travel dates, accommodation details, a passport-style photo or selfie, contact details and a payment method.
