Tsavo – Kenya’s Great Wild Safari Destination

Tsavo is one of Kenya’s most iconic and dramatic safari destinations. In our opinion, it is one of the greatest wilderness areas left in East Africa.

Together, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park form one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Kenya. This is big, wild, rugged country — a place of red earth, lava flows, ancient hills, open plains, river systems, baobabs and some of the most beautiful safari landscapes in Africa.

Tsavo is best known for its famous red elephants, wide open spaces and incredible sense of wilderness. It may not always offer the same easy, concentrated wildlife viewing as the Maasai Mara, but that is part of its magic. Tsavo feels raw, real and wonderfully untamed.

For travellers who want a safari that feels adventurous, scenic and less crowded, Tsavo is one of Kenya’s most rewarding destinations.

5 Reasons to Visit Tsavo

1. Kenya’s Great Wilderness Safari — Tsavo is vast, wild and beautifully untamed, offering a real sense of space and freedom that is hard to find in busier safari areas.

2. Home of the Famous Red Elephants — Tsavo’s elephants are often covered in the park’s red dust, creating one of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife images.

3. Two Very Different Safari Experiences — Tsavo East is known for open plains, big skies and large elephant herds, while Tsavo West offers volcanic landscapes, hills, springs, lava flows and dramatic scenery.

4. A Scenic Photographer’s Dream — Red earth, baobab trees, elephants, volcanic hills, dust, golden light and huge landscapes make Tsavo a wonderful destination for photography.

5. Perfect Safari and Beach Combination — Tsavo is one of the easiest safari destinations to combine with the Kenya coast, making it ideal for guests visiting Diani, Watamu, Kilifi or Mombasa.

Places to Stay in Tsavo

You can also compare up to 3 different safari camps and lodges at once to help find the right camp or lodge for your trip, and we send your enquiry to 3 selected different property specialists, saving you the trouble of doing it yourself.

One of the things we love most about Tsavo is the variety of safari accommodation available across both Tsavo East and Tsavo West.

From classic safari lodges and tented camps to remote wilderness camps and properties with views over waterholes, lava flows, plains and hills, there is something here for many different styles of traveller.

Where you stay in Tsavo depends on what kind of safari experience you are looking for.

Tsavo East is often better for open landscapes, big skies, red elephants, dry-country wildlife and a classic wide-open safari feel. It is also very convenient for guests travelling between Nairobi and the Kenya coast.

Tsavo West is more dramatic and varied, with volcanic scenery, hills, springs, rocky outcrops and beautiful views. It can feel more scenic and adventurous, with excellent landscapes and a very different character from Tsavo East.

We recommend staying at least 2 or 3 nights in Tsavo, although 3 or 4 nights is even better if you want to explore both Tsavo East and Tsavo West properly.

Best Time to Visit Tsavo

Tsavo can be visited throughout the year, but the best time for general wildlife viewing is usually during the drier months, when animals are more likely to gather around water sources.

The main dry seasons are generally June to October and January to March. During these months, the bush is thinner, wildlife is easier to see, and elephants are often found around rivers, waterholes and permanent water sources.

Wildlife & Photography

For wildlife photographers, Tsavo offers something very different from the Maasai Mara or Serengeti.

This is not just about close-up predator action. Tsavo is about atmosphere, colour, space and scale. It is a landscape photographer’s safari destination as much as a wildlife destination.

The red elephants of Tsavo are one of the great photographic subjects in Kenya. When they are covered in red dust and moving through dry bush, open plains or past baobab trees, they create some of the most memorable images in East Africa.

The Red Elephants of Tsavo

The red elephants are one of the main reasons people travel to Tsavo.

The elephants are not naturally red, but they appear that way because they dust themselves with Tsavo’s rich red soil. This gives them their famous colour and makes them one of Kenya’s most recognisable safari sights.

Tsavo is one of the most important elephant areas in Kenya, and seeing large bulls, family herds and elephants moving through the red landscape is one of the great highlights of any visit.
