ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Tsavo National Park
Tsavo National Park is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, together forming one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Kenya. Tsavo East is known for its vast open plains, dramatic red earth and famous “red elephants”, coloured by the park’s iron-rich soil. Highlights include the Galana River, Lugard Falls, Mudanda Rock and the immense Yatta Plateau. Its open landscapes make wildlife easier to spot, with elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes and many other species found across this wonderfully wild park.
Tsavo West is greener, hillier and more dramatic, with volcanic landscapes, rocky ridges, lava flows and natural springs. Mzima Springs is one of its best-known attractions, where crystal-clear water supports hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Other highlights include the Shetani Lava Flow, Chaimu Crater and excellent views towards Mount Kilimanjaro. Wildlife can sometimes be harder to spot among the thicker vegetation, but the scenery, variety of habitats and quieter atmosphere make Tsavo West especially rewarding to explore.
